Global Initiatives

Between 2012 and 2015, Western underwent several assessment and planning processes to better understand the ways in which its communities (faculty, staff, students) were globally engaged as well as the challenges the institution (services, policies, systems) faced with regard to global engagement. The One World Curriculum Team and the Internationalization Council, in cooperation with the American Council on Education’s Internationalization Laboratory, collected both quantitative and qualitative data then produced both actionable recommendations and reports designed to guide the university in its goal of reaching comprehensive internationalization.

In the same timeframe, and in a variety of venues, the University President and University Provost both expressed their belief that Western needed to be globally engaged. To that end, and based on three years of data gathering, CIS has engaged partners across the university and around the world in making that goal a reality. Among current initiatives:

  • Creating a Global Engagement Council to implement the Action Plan
  • Conducting faculty workshops on internationalizing the curriculum
  • Working with colleges and programs to build strategic partnerships with universities abroad
  • Cooperating with Admissions, Extended Education, and community college partners to increase the number of international students at Western
  • Supporting International Programs and Exchanges in identifying study abroad experiences for more students at Western
  • Providing travel support for Global Learning faculty
  • Working with faculty on the Reel World film series
