About the Minor
 

The Minor in International Studies is designed to provide knowledge, perspective and skills that are critical for global competence. Students completing this minor will be well prepared for a variety of professional opportunities in an increasingly interconnected world. The minor builds largely on existing courses across the colleges and complements existing majors.

The course of study for the minor will be determined in consultation with International Studies advisors in several departments on campus. Initial advisement can be secured through the Center for International Studies, College Hall 103, (360) 650-7544

Minor – International Studies 35 credits

  • INTL 201 and 499
  • Completion of an approved international program or exchange
  • At least one foreign language course above 201 level; 100 level may be acceptable for languages not commonly taught
  • Additional credits from courses approved by the faculty advisors for international studies and at least two related fields such as anthropology, business and economics, communications, environmental studies, history, liberal studies, political science; at least two such courses to be completed on campus
  • At least one foreign language course above 201 level; 100 le vel may be accepted for languages not commonly taught (3 to 5 credits)
  • Completion of an approved study abroad program or exchange (minimum 4 credits, but up to 24 credits could apply to the minor)
  • If study abroad credits are less than 24, then additional elective credits taken here on campus are needed to reach the 35 credits necessary. These electives can consist of courses with international content in any department or college, and often include courses regularly offered in anthropology, business and economics, communications, environmental studies, history, liberal studies, and political science.

201 Introduction to Global Studies (5)

Introduction to contemporary global issues, drawing on the integrated knowledge and methodologies of multiple disciplines.

499 Thesis in International Studies (3)

Prereq: INTL 201. Capstone independent study course integrating global perspective and interdisciplinary bodies of knowledge into a direct research paper under faculty advisement.
