Korea: Modern History, Culture, and People
After the Cold War, Korea has remained as the only country, which is divided into a socialist regime and a capitalist regime, in the current world. South Korea is widely studied as a case study in business and economy due to its great success from ashes after the Korean War whereas North Korea is just known as the most dangerous country to the Western world. Despite this irony, there is no class on Korea at Western Washington University and studying Korea has left as a lacuna at Western curriculum. This course surveys modern history and culture of Korea. Studying Korean people through psychological and anthropological perspectives will be the main focus in this class. Recent Korean films and modern literature will be used as main class materials.
