Global Chinoiserie and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

  • Dr. Chi-ming Yang , University of Pennsylvania
  • When: 11/06/09, 12 - 1 p.m.
  • Where: Haggard Hall 153

China’s demand for silver in the early modern period created a global network of exchanges that connected the transatlantic trade in African slaves with the Asian trade in commodities. This presentation considers how Asian export art and European chinoiserie objects captured the global circulation of humans, objects, and animals in the 17th and 18th centuries. The hybrid designs of these art works reveal a distinctive aesthetics of European colonialism and East-West trade.
